Twelve Zodiac Chess

Twelve Zodiac Chess is an illustration project that reimagines the twelve Chinese zodiac signs as chess pieces arranged on a board.
Instead of assigning traditional hierarchies or literal roles, each zodiac character is treated as an equal presence — occupying its own position, posture, and personality within the same shared space.

The chessboard becomes a visual metaphor for balance, movement, and coexistence. While each figure carries distinct traits and expressions, they are connected through a unified visual system, suggesting that individuality and structure can exist simultaneously.

Rendered in a soft, hand-drawn style with muted yet playful colours, the illustration explores themes of identity, positioning, and quiet tension — reflecting how different characters navigate within a set of shared rules. The use of animal forms and costume-like details allows the work to remain lighthearted while still holding symbolic weight.

This project reflects my interest in symbolic illustration, visual storytelling, and transforming cultural references into gentle, contemporary narratives.
